Order and disorder, (Dis)order

Organized by the students of M2 TILE and the Ecole doctorale ALL University of Western Brittany, Brest, France

12th March 2020

Although “order is never observed, it is disorder which attracts attention because it is awkward and intrusive” (E.Levi), order and disorder appear to us as two sides of the same coin which makes both themes worthy of attention. While order corresponds to a state in which everything is in its correct or appropriate place, disorder is the opposite; it is a state of confusion relative to order. Human conflicts constantly renew the questions of order and disorder, whether it is from a political, societal, geographical or social point of view. Our contemporary era of unrest of all sorts raises new aspects of order and disorder and allows us to study this theme. During our conference, we will only be interested in the social aspect of the subject. These two interrelated terms can therefore be approached through texts, images and from a civilizational, linguistic or literary angle amongst others. This one-day conference aims to provide a variety of insights on this complex subject and will bring together scholars from different fields including literature, linguistics, history, geography, philosophy, psychology, sociology and others.
