Like any professional experience, the completion of a doctorate must be accompanied by training to discover, develop or formalise skills. The Brittany Doctoral Charter recommends that 100 hours of training be included in the Individual Training Plan (PFI) at the end of the doctorate.

Each doctoral school may define exceptions to this recommended volume to take into account the experience profile of doctoral students (young graduates, experienced professionals, etc.) or the specific conditions of the doctoral project (e.g. co-supervision).

Training in research ethics and scientific integrity is compulsorily included in the Individual Training Plan of each doctoral student.

To find out more about the organisation of the training offer and the construction of the PFI, consult the Collège doctoral de Bretagne website, under the heading "Training offer".

To consult the online catalogue, apply for a course or track the number of courses attended, visit the Amethis website.

For an institutional doctoral contract (CDE)

The amount depends on the year in which the contract is signed:

  • Before 2021: €1,768.55 gross per month
  • At 1 September 2021: €1,866 gross per month
  • At 1 September 2022: €1,975 gross per month

Remuneration also depends on the additional activity carried out by the doctoral student - teaching in particular.

For more information, please see the Doctoral Contract section below.

For a CIFRE (Industrial Agreement for Training through Research) doctoral contract:

The permanent contract (CDI) or three-year fixed term contract (CDD) sets the annual gross salary to be at least equal to €23,484, which is €1,957 gross per month.

The doctoral contract (contrat doctoral) is likely to be the main form of support available to students preparing a doctorate degree. It lasts for three years and provides the social safeguards of an employment contract under public law.

Several different types of organization can be involved as host structures and/or in the financing of the doctoral contract:

  • Higher education and research institutions (CDE: Institutional Doctoral Contract)
  • Local authorities (collectivités territoriales) e.g. doctoral research grants (ARED)
  • Companies (as part of a CIFRE framework: (Industrial Agreement for Training through Research)
  • European Commission
  • ...
Details on the missions and duties of contractual doctoral students:
  • The contract must allocate all or most of the working time to research (5/6ths of the time). However, it may provide for other additional activities, without exceeding 1/6th of the annual working time.
  • Specialization assignment (must not exceed 32 days/year).
  • Assignment in the field of dissemination of scientific and technical information, or in the valorization of research results (must not exceed 32 days/year).
  • Teaching assignment (64hrs/year maximum). Doctoral students are therefore subject to the obligations involved in this activity and participate, notably as part an Institutional Doctoral Contract (CDE), in the knowledge tests and examinations related to their teaching (without additional remuneration or reduction in working time).

For any questions, please contact the UBO Human Resources Department (ressources humaines): drh.contractuels@univ-brest.fr

Co-Supervision of a doctoral thesis enables the international dimension of doctoral schools and the scientific cooperation between French and foreign research teams to be further developed.
Doctoral students carry out their work under the responsibility of two thesis directors: one in France and the other in a foreign country. The two co-supervisors work jointly with the doctoral student, who is required to work alternately in both institutions.
